Part 7

All eyes turned towards the doctor.

"Brianne suffered major head trauma. She's in a coma. We won't know how bad her brain was injured until we get her test results back."

Joan crumbled. Tears fell from her eyes at the thought of her daughter never waking up again. Never getting married. Never having children.

Josh's face immediately turned to anger and again Paige was afraid of what her brother might do if he ever came face the person to face with who did this. She really didn't want to have to bail Josh out of jail again.

Joan composed herself just long enough to make a simple request, "May I see my daughter?"

"Yes, of course. She's in room 187."

Hank wrapped his arms around Joan comfortingly, "Thank you, doctor."

Joan walked into the cubicle that the doctor had called a room. Her daughter's once vibrant, gorgeous body was now badly bruised and broken.

"Oh God, Hank, who would do something like this?"

"I think we know the answer to that question, Joanie."

Joan turned back towards her daughter and sat down. She clasped Bree's hand trying to will her to wake up.

Bree, however, remained unresponsive to the world around her.

Wei-Lee stood in the shadows surrounding Surf Central. He vowed to make Rae pay for what she had done to him and he knew the best way to do that was to hurt Casey.

Seeing her poor, innocent, perfect Casey hurt would kill Rae.

"If only." Wei-Lee thought.

It tore Wie-Lee deeply that Rae was in love with Casey again.

"Not again, always. She always loved him. Even when she made love to me."

"Bitch!" Wei-Lee smashed his brandy glass with the back of his hand.

He quickly regained his composure, like he always did. Wei-Lee picked up the phone calmly and dialed.

"Yes, everything is ready. Rae will be sorry she ever returned to Sunset Beach." Wei-Lee said with a smile, "Yes, of course. This way we can both get what we want."

He hung up the phone and picked up the bottle of brandy. "I'm sorry Sara, but Casey's got to go. Then no one will be in the way of getting Rae back… for good."

"Do you think she's lying?" Sam asked a distressed Ricardo.

"I don't know. Tess has nothing to gain by lying."

"But nothing to lose either."

Ricardo returned to his computer and began to search through all the news articles concerning Ross. Finally, he found the one he wanted. "An English Wedding."

"Here we go."

"Ross English to marry long-time love" was the caption and underneath was a photo of a smiling Tess and Ross.

"Why did Ross come here in the first place?" Sam asked confused. "Maybe we should try and get some more answers from Tess."

"You go. She is more likely to talk to you. I'll stay here and she if we can get enough evidence to arrest Ross. We'll meet up later, ok?"

"Yes. I have a room at the Inn. It's on the seventh floor. Room 706."

"I'll meet you there in about an hour or so."

"Ok. See you then."

Sam was determined to unlock all Ross English's secrets, and arrest him for them.

But at what price…

Bette never understood how that in her life pain or loss always followed joy.

She watched Emily move on from Sean, Annie finally find happiness, Olivia and Gregory reunite, Cole and Caitlin finally conceive, and AJ find a way into her heart.

But all of that joy was followed by the sorrow of her cancer.

Bette had gotten in touch with Alex, who knew some wonderful doctors who had saved her.

Bette had a flight scheduled for the next morning to Paris for an experimental treatment. All she wanted was a chance to finally be happy. Everyone else had found happiness. Bette couldn't understand why her last chance was ruined.

"Oh, AJ. You have no idea how much I miss you."

"So why don't you come back to Sunset Beach, then?" Jude asked Bette from the doorway.

"How did you find me?"

"I have many friends with good connections."

"Emily told you, didn't she?"

"That isn't important. What's important is how could you do this to my father?"

"I'm dying. It will be easier for him this way."

"Annie had the baby. It's a girl. She wants to name her Bette Marie."

"I am sorry. You know me Jude. I wouldn't have done this if it wasn't what…if…it…best…best for…best…AJ…"

"Bette! Bette?!"

Bette reached for the chair for support as her body crumpled to the floor.

2 hours later

Jude hated hospitals. Especially the color… everything was a bland starch white. Mostly he hated watching Bette with tubes up her nose and in her throat.

As much as he wanted to, Jude respected Bette enough to not call his father. That didn't mean, of course, that he had given up trying to get through to Bette.

"Don't worry Bette, we'll go home together."

Later the same night, Olivia and Gregory lay in bed together. Olivia knew that it was fear that controlled all of Gregory's emotions. But that didn't stop her from not understanding how he couldn't be happy about them having another child.

And Gregory couldn't understand how Olivia couldn't understand his fear.

"Gregory?"

"Yes?"

"Why don't…nevermind."

"Why don't I want another child?"

"Ya."

"Olivia, it would be different if this was ten years ago or something. I just can't lose you again."

"You won't, I promise."

"You can't promise that, Olivia. You can't."

Olivia picked up her pillow and retreated to the guest bedroom another first in their marriage. Usually it was Gregory that would leave but not this time. Olivia cradled the pillow as she would her new child, and she cried herself to sleep.

Another night and Sean was late.

Amy was pissed. She was enraged. She was unable to control the flood of emotion she was experiencing.

"No doubt my loving husband is out banging his girlfriend as I speak."

Amy held onto a small frame that held her wedding picture. Amy had never been good at softball or throwing, but as she threw the picture that had once brought her so much joy she had a better arm than most pro ball players.

"Damn you, Emily. You won't win again. I lost Sean to you once. I'm not going to lose him again."

Taking a long swig of her vodka bottle, Amy grabbed her keys and fled.

Driving along the coast towards Dune Point, Amy struggled to control her emotions. She couldn't fall apart in front of Brad or Emily.

"Oh Emily, payback will be a bitch." Amy said sleething with anger.

*************************************************************************************

"Don't worry, Emily, Bette's a strong woman. And if anybody can find her it's Jude."

"I'm not. I trust Jude. I know he only has Bette's best interests at heart. More importantly… what are we going to do about us?"

"I just need to stay married to Amy until we can get the money."

"And if your plan falls through the cracks?"

"Then Amy falls with it. Not us."

"I can't afford to go to jail, Sean. This has to work."

"It will and then we can be together…forever."

"Do you have the receipts?"

"Yes, all signed to Amy Nielson. We are in, baby."

Emily was obviously satisfied with Sean's explanations and the two began another session of passionate lovemaking.

After all, there was no way their plan could fail…unless, of course, Amy learned the truth.

Derek placed the phone back on its cradle.

He had finally found a new pawn that he enjoyed. Of course, he would never replace his favorite…or Tess.

Derek couldn't deny how useful Tess was, even though he was just using her however he saw fit.

"I just may have to break my Tessie out of jail. After all, I might need her to kidnap Ben or something."

"All I need to do is kidnap Benjy and make Meg mine. Shouldn't be too hard. All we need is one dead Ben and another to take his place."

"Well let's see, there's me and then there's me."

Derek walked over towards his trunk, the trunk where he kept his most prized possessions: the ghost-face mask, chloroform rags, a gaff, a knife, a cleaver, hallucination drugs, and a small framed picture.

The couple in the picture looked so happy. "And they will be happy again, just like Meg and me.

Derek slipped the mask on and grabbed the knife, "Maybe I can give my brother another bloody heart attack."

Sunset Beach would once again feel the wrath of Derek Evans.

*************************************************************************************

Meg didn't know why she had agreed to come to the Casita with Ben. The one place that had once brought them so much joy seemed dark, cold even.

But Meg wanted to repair her broken marriage. She couldn't remember what had caused her marriage to start crumbling, but she knew that it was time to repair the damage.

Ben had left to get some wine, and Meg was determined to make the most of her time. She began running water in the hot tub and added extra bubbles. She opened Ben's suitcase and found his bathing suit and hid it in one of her drawers.

Nothing like a naked Ben to bring the spice back to their ever-bland marriage.

When Ben returned Meg was soaking in the hot tub and candles were burning around the room.

"Care to join me?"

"Mmm hmm. Just let me take care of this." Ben opened the wine and poured a glass for Meg and himself.

"Here you go, gorgeous." Ben said handing her a glass. "But I seem to be missing my bathing suit, might you have anything to do with that?"

"Who me?" Meg asked with false shock. "I would never."

"I guess I'll just have to join you in my birthday suit."

"Oh darn. What a shame."

Ben proceeded to remove all of his clothes and join Meg in the hot tub. The two made love. But as Ben kissed Meg and held her Meg couldn't shake the feeling that their happiness would be short-lived.
